Sound

So for those musicians out there, I'm sure you've all heard about color, shape, feel, (etc.) any physical characteristics of sound. My teacher always told me to play my songs with "color". I don't think I ever got that, and I don't know that I fully understand it now. But I'm slowly catching on to the idea. When she first told me that, I took it more of "use more dynamics and articulation" which I guess is part of it. But now I look at it as the emotions and the sounds that you can produce with the music by all different techniques.

I never knew a musical instrument could be so detailed, and I can see why people spend their schooling and even life careers trying to master it. There are millions of things that effect the sound: The way you move your wrist, how high you lift your fingers, how far you press the pedal, how long you hold individual notes while playing others, the phrasing. Everything. And you have to relearn it with every song to fit its particular needs.

Right now, I'm learning Deux Arabesque (Debussy) and looked it up on youtube to listen to it and get the sound in my head. I ran across this video that more literally portrays the idea of color, sound, and shape. It shows the pitch with how high and low it is, the length of the note by the size of the circle, and the color almost shows all the different parts and melodies going on all at the same time. Kind of an interesting idea, and super visual.

For today's challenge, if you're a musician, try painting something with sound. If you a different kind of artist (anything can be considered an art: painting, photography, wood-working, computer work, even being a mom!) Try using your ability in a different way.
